OPEF VEX sweeps top awards at state

On Saturday, 13 OPEF VEX Robotics teams from Brooks and Julian Middle School competed in a thrilling day of intense competition at the Illinois Middle School VEX Robotics State Championship. The event was held at Julian Middle School and was hosted by the Oak Park Education Foundation. A total of 26 teams from throughout the state battled it out in the 12′ x 12′ VEX arena in front of a packed house of cheering fans.

The teams competed in a series of exciting matches in which robots jostled to toss foam stars and bean bag cubes into scoring zones, while trying to prevent their opponents from scoring. The teams were also interviewed and observed by judges for awards such as best robot design, best programming, best sportsmanship, etc.

Nine of the OPEF teams qualified to move into the Quarterfinals. In the end, the winning alliance— made up of Julian Team Kryptonite and Brooks Team Vitamin A, along with a PWNAGE team from St. Charles— were victorious! Julian Team Kryptonite won a record 3 awards including the Excellence award, the highest honor at a VEX tournament, the Excellence Award. We were honored to have State Representative Camille Y. Lilly on hand to bestow the awards and help honor the accomplishments of these young engineers.

Thanks to all the families and fans for showing up to cheer on our teams. And special thanks to the OPEF VEX Coaches for helping make this our most winning season ever!
