March 15-17 Vex Robotics National Championship in Omaha, Nebraska recap

January 28, 2012 Vex Robotics Competition recap

In Vex Robotics, middle school students from Brooks and Julian work with technology experts to design, build and program robots. A multinational program, Vex enables students to explore the possibilities of science, technology, engineering and math in an entirely new way.

Our schools boast 20 teams, including all girls' teams, who compete against each other by programming and controlling their robots to perform tasks. This year we will organize field trips to observe regional competitions, and we will offer qualifying teams opportunities to compete in regional competitions.

Started in 2005 in Oak Park, Vex Robotics:

  • makes science, math, engineering and technology as cool for kids as sports
  • creates an engineering trajectory for girls and other students not normally engaged with robotics
  • engages tactile learners in critical thinking and problem-solving activities
Vex Robotics receives funding from the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation and the Rotary Club of Oak Park-River Forest, as well as generous support from individuals.

Vex Robotics is open to all Julian and Brooks 6th, 7th and 8th graders. It meets Wednesdays at Brooks and Thursdays at Julian from October through February and some Saturday mornings. The final competition will take place on the morning of Saturday, January 28, 2012.

Parents, volunteers, students, and advisors at Julian can find current information at the Julian Vex Robotics site.

"One of our middle school boys was having a difficult time integrating into the school community and your engaging staff helped bridge the gap. Gradually you could see him begin to feel so comfortable as he became an active member of his team. He was so excited to have us come to the final project to see what he had accomplished. And the incredible thing was the feelings of accomplishment poured over into his home life here at Hephzibah and helped him tremendously at school. Another great feat, he made friends! This was an amazing semester, an actual turn around for this child and I am sure it is one of his aha moments. Thank you so much for your innovative ideas!"
