Dr. Silver Daniel (pathologist at Central DuPage Hospital) led 5th graders in Ms. Moncatch’s class on an exploration of cells and their function in the human body. To help the students remember the components inside of a cell, they made their own edible cell model. Cookies represented the cell, icing was the “cytoplasm” and various candies represented the “organelles.”

Dr. Daniel also brought in healthy and various diseased human organs for the students to investigate. The students used microscopes provided by Dr. Daniel to view blood cells.

“The kids were more impressed with being able to see, touch and ask question about the diseased hearts, lungs and brain than the cookie “cell” model that they made.  Not what I expected!” quoted Moncatch.
