Thank you noteKristi Murray’s Arts & Culture students learned the South African gumboot dance from teaching artist Mark Vaughn, with support from Art Start. The gumboot dance (or Isicathulo) is an African dance that is performed by dancers wearing wellington boots. In South Africa these types of boots are more commonly called gumboots.

One of our favorite things about working with the kids are the thank-you letters! This note from grateful Brooks students also taught us a few new terms – “totes” and “kew”!
