For three weeks 5th graders at Longfellow spent their art time working with architect Maya Bird-Murphy creating their Sustainable Dream Homes.

Students were given an imaginary  budget of $50 to invest in sustainable strategies for their homes. They could choose from recycling/composting, a rain barrel, a solar panel, a wind turbine and/or drought-resistant plants. Since they couldn’t “afford” all of them so they had to pick and choose.

They spent one session drawing floor plans of their plots of land and the next two sessions making their 2D plans into 3D models.

A graduate of Longfellow and Architecture Adventure herself, Maya Bird-Murphy is our new Architecture Adventure coordinator and resident architect.
