Students in Ms. Nagano’s Spanish Immersion class at Lincoln Elementary School have been exploring the art of the codex book with teaching artist, Guillermo Delgado.
Mr. Delgado introduced students to codex books from the Mayan and Aztec cultures. Students then brainstormed to come up with lists in Spanish about their family traditions and rituals. They then drew, painted and assembled their own codex books.
Students were challenged to tell their story through drawing and paintings and create a custom palette by mixing primary and secondary colors.
This Art Start project is a great example of how history, culture, language, literature and art can be combined creating a truly cross-curricular activity.
