We have some special guest bloggers this month as Ms. Nelson’s third graders (Longfellow) have agreed to share their thoughts on the Geared Up program with us. Geared Up is an excellent introduction to engineering, using LEGOs. The program was first proposed by Gretchen Junker during our last Call for Ideas. Ms. Junker currently serves as the Program Coordinator, and a VEX Robotics Coach. Stay tuned for more posts from Ms. Nelson’s students, and catch up on those you missed here.

Do you know how wheels and axles work?

This week in Mrs. Nelson’s class, we worked with wheels and axles. These are some examples of things that have wheels and axles: A doorknob, a car or truck, and a wagon.

We made three kinds of cars that included wheels and axles. The one on the left was easy to move forward and turn because it had two axles. The one on the right was easy to move forward but it was not so easy to turn because it only had one axle. The one below was the easiest to steer and move forward because your finger steers it by turning the steering wheel.
