On Monday, May 20, there were ‘no boys allowed,’ as the women of OPEF VEX Robotics took over the VEX Robotics lab at Julian Middle School for the first ever OPEF Girl Scout Robotics Workshop. An all female team of 10 VEX Robotics coaches, adult professional volunteers and high school mentors hosted 29 girl scouts and their leaders at the workshop. The goal of the workshop was to introduce the girls to the fun and excitement of robotics.

Teams of 3 Girl Scouts were each guided by a mentor in the building of a small robotic vehicle called a square bot. Teams that finished assembling their bot were then able to turn it on and drive it via remote control. There was so much interest in the workshop, there was a wait list of an additional 21 girls interested in participating. The team is already making plans to host two Girl Scout Workshops next year to help accommodate all the girls interested in participating.
