“Elevator!” “Flagpole!” “Well!” “Curtains!”
Ms. Turi’s students were very clever at coming up with ideas about how pulleys are used in everyday life. They studied fixed and movable pulleys, and created their own pulley systems using LEGO mechanisms. Pulleys are just one of the simple machines the students study as a part of their multi-day Geared Up engineering residency. The children study the building instructions on their iPads and use special LEGOs to the build the machines. In addition to pulleys, the kids study gears, wheels and axles, and levers.
