As part of the Art Start program, students in Ms. Barkers’ class at Lincoln have been working with teaching artist and poet Jenn Morea on a literacy and poetry project to boost their vocabulary.
Using Christina Rossetti’s “Who Has Seen the Wind”, as inspiration, students chose one season to write about. They created odes to their chosen time of year and were encouraged to use all of the senses to inspire their writing. Ms. Morena guided the students through creative movement exercises that helped determine their choice of words.
Some of their poems will be on display at Oak Park Village Hall during the months of March and April.
The more students write, the better readers they become and the more students read, the better writers they become. Having their works displayed for the public helps reinforce the value this community places on literacy.
